Competency Test

The Florida CNA competency test consists of a written or oral examination and a skills demonstration, administered by Prometric.

For exam registration, complete an application through Prometric. Within 30 days of receipt, the Board will review your application and send an electronic statement of eligibility back to Prometric if approved.

You can find more information in the Candidate Information Bulletin.

Background Check

You must complete a Level 2 background screening through electronic fingerprinting (Livescan). Use an approved Livescan service provider to have your fingerprints submitted electronically to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

Find approved Livescan service providers at: http://www.flhealthsource.gov/background-screening/.

Results are returned to the Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse and made available to the Department for consideration during the licensure process.

You will not be listed on the Registry if you have disqualifying criminal convictions or disciplinary actions that bar you from working as a CNA in Florida. The Board reviews each applicant’s background individually.

The Board office will review applications within 30 days of receipt from Prometric. After passing your examination, it may be more than four weeks before your certificate is actually issued and mailed. Once processed, your active status appears in the Florida Nurse Aide Registry.

How to keep your license on the Florida CNA Registry

Stay Active

To maintain your active status, you must have performed nursing-related services for monetary compensation within the last 24 consecutive months in order to remain on the Registry.

Renew

CNA certification in Florida is valid for two years and must be renewed by May 31 of your renewal year. Half of Florida CNAs renew in even years and the other half in odd years. All CNAs must complete a minimum of 24 hours of in-service training each biennium (2-year period).

You can renew online through the MQA Services Portal up to 90 days before your expiration date.

Processing time: Unknown.

Reactivate your expired license

If your certification has expired but you have worked for compensation within the past 24 months, you may renew by paying the appropriate delinquency fees.

If your license becomes “Null and Void” (2 years after expiration date) or if you elected to voluntarily relinquish your CNA license, you must reapply for licensure and meet current requirements. Once null and void, the license cannot be reactivated through renewal.

Licensees who fail to meet work requirements must reapply for licensure and comply with current laws and rules, which may include retaking the competency examination.
