Requirements to get on the Rhode Island CNA Registry

Fees

The application fee is $35.

Minimum Age

Some training schools will require you to be at least 17 years old to apply.

Minimum Education

Training school may require to have a high school diploma or a GED.

Training Requirements

To qualify you must have taken a state-approved course providing a minimum of 120 hours of training, comprising 80 classroom hours and 40 clinical hours.

Competency Test

To be certified on the Rhode Island Nurse Aide Registry, you must take the examination (written and skills) within one year of your having begun the training program. The competency test must be taken with Credentia.

Background Check

You must obtain an original BCI (Background Check) with stamp and seal from the RI Attorney General’s Office. For information on this process please visit their website at: http://www.riag.ri.gov/BCI. BCI must be dated within 4 months of the date of the application.

Where to apply

You must fill in the application to be listed as a nursing assistant, available here. You will have to pay the application fee of $35 and attach the reauired documentation.

Required Documentation

You will be required to provide the completed form, a copy of your driver’s license or state-issued ID, and a less than 4-month-old original BCI (background check).

Restrictions

You must explain any conviction on the form. The Registry may not accept you.

8 weeks.

How to keep your license on the Rhode Island CNA Registry

Stay Active

The certification period is for 24 months, and you must renew every 2 years by providing verification that you have worked a minimum of eight hours during the 24-month time frame.

Renew

Renewal notices are sent out 60 days before your expiration date. You must renew your application online, on the Department of Health Platform

Reactivate your expired license

If the certification expires, you may be required to retake the competency exam.
