Fees

The application process is free of charge.

Minimum Age

Some training schools will require you to be at least 17 years old to apply.

Training school may require to have a high school diploma or a GED.

Training Requirements

To qualify you must complete a Virginia State-Approved Nurse Aide Education Program, of at least 120 clock hours in length. The curriculum of the program must include communication and interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, personal care skills, observational and reporting techniques, appropriate clinical care of the aged and disabled, skills for basic restorative services, clients’ rights, legal aspects of practice as a certified nurse aide, occupational health and safety measures, culturally sensitive care, and appropriate management of conflict.

Competency Test

To be certified on the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry, you must, within two years of completing the training requirements, take and pass the board-approved skills and written portions of the state examination. To take the test, you must sign up with Credentia. You will need to upload your Certificate of Course Completion.

You will be tested on:

  1. Basic nursing skills
  2. Personal care skills
  3. Recognition of mental health and social services needs
  4. Basic restorative services
  5. Resident or patient rights

Background Check

This will be required by your employer.

Where to apply

Once you’ve passed the examination you will automatically added to the Registry and receive a license number and temporary PIN to log into Board Nursing platform.

Restrictions

You will not be added to the Registry if you have a record of abuse, negligent practice, or misappropriation of a patient’s or resident’s
property or any disciplinary action taken or pending in any other state or territory.

How to keep your license on the Virginia CNA Registry

Stay Active

The certification period is for 24 months, and you must renew every 2 years by providing proof that you have worked a minimum of eight paid hours during the 24-month time frame.

Renew

You will receive a notice to renew 30 days before your certification is due to expire. To renew your application, you must renew your license on the Board Nursing platform.

There is a fee of $30 to renew your license.

Reactivate your expired license

If your certification expired over 90 days ago, you will be required to repeat the competency test with Credentia. You will need to show evidence that you have passed the examination and that you have performed nursing-related activities for compensation in the two years prior to the expiration date of the certificate and within the preceding two years.

There is a fee of $30 to reinstate your license.
