What This Domain Covers
Communication: Verbal and nonverbal communication with residents, families, and the healthcare team. Proper reporting of changes in a resident’s condition. Documentation principles: accuracy, timeliness, and objective language. The role of the care plan and how the CNA contributes to it.
Residents’ rights: The Residents’ Bill of Rights as defined by federal law. The right to privacy, dignity, and self-determination. Confidentiality and HIPAA basics. The right to refuse care and treatment. Advance directives and the CNA’s obligations when a resident has one.
Legal and ethical conduct: The difference between negligence, abuse, and neglect. What actions constitute battery or invasion of privacy. Mandatory reporting requirements. Maintaining professional boundaries with residents and families. Situations where the CNA must escalate to a nurse.
Healthcare team: The CNA’s scope of practice and what falls outside it. The chain of command and when to follow orders vs. when to refuse an unsafe task. Working with the interdisciplinary care team, including nurses, physical therapists, social workers, and physicians.
