Training & Certification Requirements in Michigan

It’s important to understand Michigan’s CNA certification requirements before beginning your training or applying for the exam. Meeting these requirements ensures you're eligible to test, be placed on the state registry, and work in approved healthcare settings.

Eligibility

  • Program enrollment (NATCEP): You must complete a Michigan-approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program that follows federal OBRA standards. Programs are offered by community colleges, technical schools, and long-term care facilities.
  • Good standing: Candidates must meet registry eligibility requirements (no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, misappropriation, or exploitation). Employers must verify Nurse Aide Registry status before hiring.

Training Hours & Clinicals

Michigan programs must meet or exceed federal requirements. Training includes a minimum of 75 total hours and must provide classroom/lab instruction plus supervised clinical training in a licensed facility. Before any direct resident contact, programs must deliver at least 16 hours of instruction in required areas such as communication, residents' rights and independence, infection control, and safety/emergency procedures (including the Heimlich maneuver). Many Michigan programs exceed these minimums.

Competency Evaluation (Knowledge & Skills)

After training (or via an approved route), you must pass the state-approved competency exam administered by D&SDT–HEADMASTER:

  • Knowledge test: multiple-choice (written or oral) covering core nurse-aide content domains.
  • Skills test: a timed demonstration of nurse-aide skills (hand hygiene is embedded; at least one task involves measurement/recording).

You must pass both parts to be listed. A newly trained candidate must pass the knowledge and skills exams within 24 months of program completion. Candidates typically have up to three attempts per component before retraining is required.

Placement on the Registry & Working as a CNA

Upon passing both exam components and meeting all requirements, your name is added to the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry (MINAR), managed by the Bureau of Community and Health Systems through the MI-NATES system. Employers are required to verify your active status on the registry. Under federal rules, a Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facility may employ a trainee for up to 120 days while training and testing are completed.

Renewal & Continuing Education

Michigan CNA certification must be renewed every 24 months. To remain active, you must have performed at least 40 hours of paid nursing or nursing-related services for monetary compensation during the prior 24 months. Effective March 23, 2026, CNAs will also be required to complete at least 12 hours of continuing education annually (24 hours over two years), covering topics such as abuse prevention, neglect, exploitation, and care plans. The renewal fee is $40.

Reciprocity (Out-of-State CNAs)

If you hold an active CNA certification in another U.S. state and are in good standing, you may apply for reciprocity to be placed on the Michigan registry. Michigan grants reciprocity when the other state's program meets federal standards (including a minimum of 75 hours of training) and testing was not waived. Applicants whose training or testing does not fully align with Michigan's standards may be required to pass the state competency exam before being listed. The reciprocity application fee is $40.

Costs & Reimbursement

The exam fee is $175 per examination attempt (as of March 7, 2024).

Under federal law, if you are employed byβ€”or receive an offer fromβ€”a Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facility when you begin training, the facility must cover your training and testing costs. If you are hired within 12 months of completing training, the facility must reimburse those costs on a prorated basis.
