Training Requirements

To qualify you must take a course approved by the State, which requires a minimum of 75 hours of training including 16 hours of supervised practical training. You can find more information here.

Competency Test

Certification through the Montana Certified Nurse Aide Exam: to be certified on the Montana Nurse Aide Registry, you must take the Montana Certified Nurse Aide exams, administered by D&S Diversified Technologies (Headmaster). Contact  Headmaster to set up the exams.

Background Check

This will likely be required by your employer.

Where to apply

Certification through the Montana Certified Nurse Aide Exam: once you have completed the Montana Nurse Aide Training Program and successfully passed the Montana Certified Nurse Aide exam, you must go to the BOUNDS Portal, select the Certified Nurse Aide type, and the CNA by Exam Application. Once the Certification Bureau receives your passing results from D&S Diversified Technologies, the application will be processed and you will be placed on the Registry.

Certification through the Montana Nurse Aide Nursing Student Application: those students attending a Montana University or College in the Nursing Program that have completed the required course listed here may apply as a CNA. You have to apply through the BOUNDS Portal, select the Certified Nurse Aide type and the Montana Nursing Student Application, and send a copy of your official transcript by email to cna@mt.gov.

Restrictions

A finding of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property may prevent you from being registered, and if registered, will be found on the Registry.

How to keep your license on the Montana CNA Registry

Stay Active

The certification period is for 24 months, and you must renew every 2 years by providing verification that you have worked a minimum of eight hours during the 24-month time frame.

Renew

Certificates can be renewed starting 90 days before expiration through the BOUNDS portal.
