Training & Certification Requirements in Indiana

Before starting your training, it’s important to know exactly what Indiana requires for CNA certification. Meeting these standards ensures you're eligible to test, be placed on the state registry, and work in approved healthcare settings.

Eligibility

  • Program enrollment (NATCEP): You must complete an Indiana Department of Health (IDOH)–approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program. Programs are offered by high schools, career centers, community colleges, and licensed health care facilities.
  • Good standing: Candidates must be eligible for placement on the Nurse Aide Registry (no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation). Employers must verify registry status prior to hire.

Training Hours & Clinicals

Indiana requires a minimum of 105 total hours of nurse aide training as part of the NATCEP. The curriculum includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 75 hours of supervised clinical experience in a licensed facility. Programs must also provide required introductory instruction before any direct resident contact, in accordance with federal OBRA requirements. Required topics include residents' rights, infection control, communication, and safety/emergency procedures.

Competency Exam (Knowledge & Skills)

After completing training, you must pass Indiana's state-approved competency evaluation:

  • Knowledge test: 100 multiple-choice questions, requiring a minimum score of 80% to pass.
  • Skills evaluation: hand hygiene plus four randomly selected nurse aide skills, including at least one measurement task. The skills test is timed and must be performed in the exact order listed for each skill.

Candidates have up to three attempts per section within the allowed testing window. Those who do not pass must complete a new training program before retesting. Exams are scheduled, administered, and scored through Ivy Tech Community College under IDOH oversight.

Placement on the Registry & Working as a CNA

Once you pass both exam components, your name is added to the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry. Employers must verify your active status before hiring. Under federal rules, Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facilities may employ a trainee for up to 120 days while training and testing are completed.

Renewal

To remain active on the registry, CNAs must have performed at least 8 hours of paid nursing or nursing-related duties within the past 24 months. Renewal is completed through the Indiana Department of Health's online system and requires employer verification of work hours.

Reciprocity (Out-of-State CNAs)

Active CNAs from other states may apply for reciprocity to transfer their certification into Indiana. Applicants must provide verification of good standing from their current state and pass the Indiana written competency exam. The skills exam is waived for reciprocity applicants. Applications are processed through the IDOH reciprocity portal managed by Ivy Tech.

Costs

As of January 2025, the Indiana CNA exam fee is $100 for both parts taken together or $90 for a single-part retake. Fees are paid during scheduling. Candidates should verify the most current fees with IDOH or Ivy Tech before applying.
