Training & Certification Requirements in Texas

Before enrolling, it's important to understand what Texas requires to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), also called a Nurse Aide. Meeting these standards ensures you're eligible to test, be placed on the state registry, and work in approved healthcare settings.

Eligibility

  • Program enrollment: You must complete a Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)โ€“approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP). These programs are offered through community colleges, technical schools, and long-term care facilities across the state.
  • Background checks: All candidates must pass a criminal history check consistent with Texas Health & Safety Code ยง250.006 and cannot be listed on the Texas Employee Misconduct Registry or have a revoked CNA certification.

Training Hours & Clinicals

Texas requires a minimum of 100 total clock hours of instruction, including 60 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of hands-on clinical training in a licensed nursing facility. Before any direct resident contact, you must complete at least 16 hours of instruction in required topics such as communication, infection control, residents' rights, safety and emergency procedures (including the Heimlich maneuver), and promoting residents' independence and dignity.

Certification Exam (NNAAP)

After completing training, you must pass both parts of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam, administered by Prometric under contract with HHSC. The exam includes a written (or oral) knowledge test and a skills evaluation. Both portions must be passed within 24 months of completing training. Candidates have up to three attempts for each portion of the exam; those who do not pass after three attempts must retrain before testing again.

Placement on the Registry & Working as a CNA

Once both exam components are passed, your name is added to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry, maintained by HHSC. You may then work as a CNA in nursing homes, hospitals, home health agencies, and other licensed healthcare settings. Federal rules also allow facilities to employ CNA trainees for up to 120 days while completing training and testing requirements.

Renewal & In-Service Education

Texas CNA certification must be renewed every 24 months. To stay active on the registry, you must have performed paid nursing- or health-related duties for at least 8 consecutive hours under the supervision of a licensed nurse within the past 24 months. In addition, CNAs working in Medicare- or Medicaid-certified facilities must complete at least 24 hours of in-service education every two years, which employers are responsible for documenting.

Costs & Reimbursement

Exam fees are set by Prometric. Under federal and state law, if you are employed by (or receive a job offer from) a Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facility when you begin training, the facility must cover your training and testing costs. If you are hired within 12 months of completing training, the facility must reimburse you for those costs on a prorated basis.

Reciprocity

If you are already certified as a CNA in another U.S. state and your certification is active and in good standing, you may apply for reciprocity to be added to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry without retraining. Applicants must submit a reciprocity application through TULIP (Texas Unified Licensure Information Portal), provide proof of current certification, and pass the required background checks.
