Is CNA to PTA Worth It?

Fast answer

For CNAs who can commit to about two years of school, yes: it is one of the biggest raises from CNA without nursing school. PTAs earn a median of $68,380, and BLS projects 23% job growth over the decade, against 3% for CNAs. The catches: competitive admissions, prerequisites such as anatomy and physiology (and often physics), programs that mostly run weekdays, and a national exam. Skip it if you need income within months (phlebotomy), want the nursing ladder (LPN), or want to leave hands-on care (medical coding).

Who this path fits best

  • CNAs who like helping people get moving again. Rehab is about progress: walking farther, transferring alone, going home.
  • CNAs in nursing homes and rehab. Nursing homes employ about 10% of PTAs and pay them a median of $77,440, so your setting is a real advantage.
  • CNAs ready for college science. Anatomy and physiology, often physics, and a competitive application come first.
  • CNAs who want a licensed role without nursing. A defined scope under a physical therapist, with steady demand.

Who should probably pick a different path

  • Need to earn more within a few months? PTA takes about two years of school, often weekdays.

    CNA to Phlebotomist → 8–16 weeks · $45,230

  • Want to stay on the nursing ladder? LPN takes 12 to 18 months and leads on to RN.

    CNA to LPN → 12–18 months · $64,400

  • Want to leave hands-on care? Medical coding is desk work, with a certificate in months.

    CNA to Medical Coder → 4–12 months · $51,140

  • Want the highest non-nursing pay? Ultrasound takes similar time and pays more at the median.

    CNA to Ultrasound Tech → 12–24 months · $96,590

  • Want the highest long-term ceiling? RN opens management, NP and most other healthcare ladders.

    CNA to RN → 2–4 years · $97,550

Does Your CNA Help You Get Into PTA School?

At some programs, yes: they give admission points for a CNA certificate or patient-care work. No program we read requires a CNA, and it does not count toward the coursework.

Is there a CNA to PTA bridge program?

No. Every PTA finishes a CAPTE-accredited associate degree, and we found no program that shortens it for CNAs. In physical therapy, "bridge" means PTA to physical therapist (see where PTA leads).

CNA vs. PT Aide vs. PTA: What Changes

A PT aide job needs no license but pays less than CNA work. The PTA license is what brings the raise.

An aide job is a way to see therapy up close, not a raise: aides earn $7,020 less than CNAs at the median, and their tasks are mostly support, such as setting up the treatment area and moving patients. Some programs still reward it at admission: Greenville gives rehab tech or aide work 8 points.

What Do PTAs Do, and What Can't They Do?

PTAs treat patients in the plan of care the physical therapist sets. The physical therapist evaluates, diagnoses and writes or changes the plan.

Medicare pays 85% of the usual rate for therapy done in whole or part by a PTA (CMS), and it allows physical therapists in private practice to supervise PTAs under general supervision (CMS).

How Does PTA Training Work?

A two-year associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited program: about three quarters classroom and lab, one quarter clinical, with an average of 16 weeks in full-time clinicals.

Without CAPTE accreditation you cannot sit the NPTE, and without the NPTE no state will license you. CAPTE counts about 380 accredited and candidate PTA programs. Coursework covers anatomy, physiology and kinesiology (BLS), and APTA describes a typical program as five semesters (APTA).

Prerequisites most CNAs still need

Anatomy and physiology I and IIWith lab, at almost every program, and often the course that weighs most in the ranking
PhysicsAt some programs, for example Santa Fe College (with lab) and Lane Community College
College math and EnglishGreenville asks for college math, most ask for English composition
Entrance testTEAS at Greenville, HESI A2 at Tarrant County College (at least 70 in each section)
GPAMinimums such as 2.5 (Santa Fe, Tarrant County), and points for higher grades

From the program pages of Santa Fe College, Lane, Greenville and Tarrant County. Some programs add a semester or a year of prerequisites before the two-year core.

Observation hours: why CNA shifts usually don't count

Many programs ask you to watch a physical therapist or PTA at work before you apply, and the hours must be in physical therapy. Tarrant County College asks for 40, counting paid hours only as a PT tech or aide. Jefferson State Community College asks for 40 under a licensed PT or PTA, with 8 in an acute care hospital, an inpatient rehab facility or a skilled nursing facility (observation form). Others list none, such as Santa Fe, Lane and Kellogg. If you work in a nursing home, ask its therapy team whether you can observe: that is the easiest way in.

Can you do it online?

Partly. Hybrids put lectures online, but labs and clinicals are in person: NorthWest Arkansas Community College brings students to campus for three-day labs every three to four weeks, and Lane asks for one campus day a week in the first year. We found no fully online PTA program.

How Long Does It Take to Become a PTA?

Plan for 2 to 3 years from your first prerequisite to a license. The program itself takes about two years.

Tip

Getting in takes the most planning. Programs admit one class a year, often with a spring deadline, and many rank applicants by points. Finish the prerequisites with strong grades, earn any points your CNA gives, and apply to more than one program.

How Much Does PTA School Cost?

The average public program costs $13,790 for in-district students, CAPTE reports. The five programs we checked range from about $9,500 to $24,500 for residents.

How Much Do PTAs Make? Salary and Job Outlook

A median of $68,380, $26,120 more than CNAs (about $2,177 a month), and BLS projects 23% job growth over the decade.

The lowest-paid 10 percent earn under $47,750 and the top 10 percent over $89,510 (BLS). Demand grows with an aging population, and BLS expects outpatient and long-term care providers to rely on PTAs to keep therapy costs down (BLS).

Are PTAs being phased out?

Not according to the data. BLS projects PTA jobs to grow from about 114,100 to 140,400 over the decade. Medicare's 85% rate for PTA services is a real pressure on some employers, but Medicare has also made PTAs easier to use in private practice by allowing general supervision.

What CNAs Often Underestimate About Becoming a PTA

Getting in, the science, and how hard it is to keep working during the program. Knowing this early helps you plan, not quit.

Admission is competitive.

CAPTE's program data shows an average of 42 applicants for 24 planned seats per program, and 28% of new students already held a bachelor's degree. Lane Community College admitted 26 of 61 applicants in a recent cycle.

The prerequisites are real college science.

Anatomy and physiology with lab, and at some programs physics. Grades in these courses often decide your rank.

Most programs run on weekdays, full time.

Santa Fe College asks students to be available Monday to Friday, 8 to 4:30. Tarrant County College advises against working during the program, and its courses are offered once a year, so failing one can cost a year. Lane's internships are six weeks at 36 hours a week.

The NPTE is a real hurdle.

79% of US graduates passed on the first try in FSBPT's latest yearly report, and there are four fixed test dates a year. A failed attempt can mean months of waiting.

The work is physical too.

BLS notes that PTAs often lift and move patients, kneel, stoop, bend and stand for long periods, and are vulnerable to back injuries. Your CNA body mechanics help.

Your scope has a ceiling.

The physical therapist evaluates and sets the plan. If you want to run the plan yourself one day, plan for the PT bridge or a DPT later.

Where Does PTA Lead Next?

Most PTAs grow by specializing. The big step up is a PTA to physical therapist bridge, which CAPTE lists at four schools.

Where PTA leads next
Next stepWhat it takes
Physical therapistmedian $102,760A doctoral degree (DPT). CAPTE lists four PTA to PT bridges: Concordia University Wisconsin, the University of Findlay, UTMB Galveston and William Carey University CAPTE
Advanced proficiencyAPTA recognizes PTA advanced proficiency in areas such as acute care, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics and wound management APTA
Occupational therapy assistantmedian $72,300A separate associate degree and license. Similar setting, a different focus: daily activities rather than movement

Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a PTA

Can a CNA become a physical therapy assistant?

Yes, but not through a CNA shortcut. Every PTA finishes a two-year associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited program, passes the national exam (NPTE) and gets a state license. Your CNA helps with admission at some programs, for example 10 points at Kellogg Community College and 5 at Greenville Technical College.

Can CNAs work in physical therapy?

Yes, as physical therapy aides or rehab techs, which need no license. But aides earn a median of $35,240, less than CNAs, and do mostly support tasks. To treat patients you need the PTA degree and license.

Is there a CNA to PTA bridge program?

No. We found no program that shortens the PTA degree for CNAs, and every PTA must finish a CAPTE-accredited associate degree. In physical therapy, "bridge" means PTA to physical therapist: CAPTE lists four such programs.

How long does it take to go from CNA to PTA?

Plan for 2 to 3 years: prerequisites (often a semester or two), then about two years in the program (CAPTE's average professional phase is 74 weeks, including 16 weeks of full-time clinicals), then the NPTE, offered four times a year.

Does CNA experience count for PTA school?

For admission points at some programs: Kellogg 10, Greenville 5 (plus 5 for six months of direct patient care), Santa Fe College 2, Lane Community College up to 2. It does not count toward the coursework, and CNA shifts usually do not count as observation hours unless they are in a physical therapy department.

Can you do PTA school online?

Partly. Hybrid programs put lectures online, but labs and clinicals are in person: NorthWest Arkansas Community College brings students to campus for three-day labs every three to four weeks, and Lane Community College asks for one campus day a week in the first year. We found no fully online PTA program.

Is PTA school hard to get into?

Often. CAPTE's program data shows an average of 42 applicants for 24 planned seats, and 28% of new students already held a bachelor's degree. Prerequisites with good grades, any admission points you can earn and applying to more than one program all help.

Do physical therapist assistants need a license?

Yes. Every state requires PTAs to be licensed or certified (BLS), which means graduating from an accredited program and passing the NPTE. Physical therapy aides need no license.

What can a PTA not do?

Evaluate a patient, make the diagnosis or write and change the plan of care. Those stay with the physical therapist. The PTA treats patients under the PT's direction and at least general supervision, where the PT must be reachable but not necessarily on site.

Are physical therapist assistants being phased out?

No sign of it in the data: BLS projects PTA jobs to grow 23% over the decade. Medicare pays 85% of the usual rate for services done in whole or part by a PTA, a real pressure on some employers, but it has also made PTAs easier to use in private practice by allowing general supervision.

How much more do PTAs earn than CNAs?

About $26,120 a year at the median: $68,380 for physical therapist assistants against $42,260 for nursing assistants (BLS). PTAs in home health and nursing homes earn the most.

Can I keep working as a CNA during PTA school?

Some, but plan for less. Many programs run full-time on weekdays (Santa Fe College asks students to be available Monday to Friday, 8 to 4:30), and the full-time clinicals leave little room. Hybrid programs and Greenville's six-semester extended track give more flexibility, and per diem or weekend CNA shifts fit best. Our CNA jobs page lists openings near you, with a part-time filter.
